I read Krakauer's Into Thin Air just last week. It's a good read but I came away from it not liking Krakauer very much. But, I repeat, it is a good read & I would reccomend it. Gripping story.

Yes I read it. You need to read also
The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev, et al (Paperback) in which he answers Krakauer.
I do not like Krakauer's account esp of Boukreev, who died in an accident in Russia, shortly after his book came out.
Krakauer IS a good writer though.

Into Thin Air is very well written, but of course it's one man's viewpoint. One of the most important oother viewpoints is covered in Anatoly Boukreev, in his book about the same exact climb,
The Climb. Boukreev doesn't have Krakauer's talent as a writer, but he does explain a lot of the things about his style of climbing that Krakauer didn't understand. Unfortunately, Boukreev never got to tour and promote his book -- he was killed in an avalanche in the Himalayas (I think on Annapurna... I'd have to look it up) before the book was published.
All of the stuff from the expeditions to discover the fate of George Leigh-Mallory and Eddie Irvine from the '27 climb is worth reading.

Gripping story is right.
I was afraid to turn the lights out after reading it.
Still creeps me out.
