Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's top education adviser is calling for a complete and dramatic overhaul of the way California pays for public schools.
Education Secretary Richard Riordan said Wednesday that in light of The Bee's recent investigation of school financing, the new Republican administration is expanding its proposals for education reform to include a new kind of student funding formula.

Very good info.
Each district sounds like it is its own little fiefdom with its own characteristics that determine how much they can grab out of the money trough.
As a side note, we have no children but do have nieces and nephews in schools, so it is not like I have an axe to grind with the districts, per se. But I also live in the Bay Area where we have as much screwed up management as anywhere in the state. It is in the news from time to time how the boards and managers just don;t handle much less count beans well.
However, being a taxpayer and getting milked just like someone with 10 kids, I want the maximum ROI for my dollar, is that too much to ask?
Thanks again for the info.

Thanks the ping out.
At least the Dow finished over 10,000. Now, the trick will be to keep going. It may pump a little ooomph into the valley job market, but the demRats are still blocking real progress for all of us.
Are there any threads up on the pressure by Moody's or where are you seeing the report?
These demRats are just frickin' unbelievable in their continuing efforts to undercut the will of the sane people in this state.

This could be a very good change. The current system is very inequitable and unfair. My kid's district gets thousands of dollars less per student than the neighboring district. Both have similar socio-ecomomic profiles.
This is also a way to find out where the money really goes - because a lot of it is never making it to the kids. The CTA and educrats will howl like stick pigs about this proposal. If they do, you can bet it is a good thing.

Uh, noooooo. I just wanted ping him to this thread since he's a home-schooler.

Thanks... That's right, huh? Home schoolers get no relief from the state as I recall either... or do they have some minimal involvement? I think we have quite a few home schoolers here at FR.

Oh sure, homeschoolers still get to pay all the wonderful taxes that everybody else pays without being able to use the resources of their taxdollars since they choose to keep their kids out of governmental/union indoctrination camps.

"The system is so mind-boggling," Riordan said. "It is impossible to understand."Kinda reminds you of the "economic experts" that
"couldn't make heads or tails" out of the state budget data, huh?
Not to worry. You're in good hands.
Go Arnold ;-)

I wonder how much leeway the locals have in spending with all the mandates from DC and SAC...

Are there any threads up on the pressure by Moody's or where are you seeing the report? I "think" I caught the end of an interview on CNBC of someone from Moody's. Maybe the Waspman saw something also!

Ok regarding , Arnoold, I was listening to Ken & John talking to McClintock. He says there is not really anything new in this compromise with the Demoncrats, it is just PR. I am disappointed!

I think people are losing their friggen minds all over the place! This is getting scary! Who's runnin this state anyway? The people, or politicians, or celebrities, or unions, or litigators, or judges, or WHAT???

And after Arnold wins, his FR supporters can go around the state bayonetting the wounded.

I just caught a snippet on the 9 oclock news on kRON in SF, a deal is on paper in "principle", bond and balanced budget go on ballot in March. no cap per se, spending can;t exceed revenue or such. I'll probably stay up for a bit to see what shakes out of this mess.

Riordan said Edmonton puts much of the money directly into the hands of school principals, something he and Schwarzenegger would like to see in California to reduce bureaucracy and encourage greater personal accountability for student achievement. Whatever happened to elected school boards Dickie Pooh?
