I thought these Amber Alerts are not supposed to be issued when the parents are the abductors?
Now, if the children have been maliciously mistreated and there is an urgent doubt about their safety in the custody of the parents, I say go get 'em and rescue them and put the parents in jail.
But, if this is a case of some overzealous state agency or judge deciding to interpose the state's interest over those of the family, I say screw 'em. Leave the family alone.
That's true; this seems to be an obvious misuse of the system.
If I'm not mistaken, that's been the case in most or all of the few alerts we've had in Iowa.
When this Amber Alert was broadcast at 11 PM last night, my first thought was to guess it's a(nother) non-custodial parent. Then, this morning, I heard that was indeed the case (both parents, even).
If the system continues to be used this way, the "Amber Alert" will one day be generally perceived as nothing more than a boy-who-cried-wolf annoyance, rather than the search-and-rescue tool it was intended to be. If there's not a policy against using it when a parent "abducts," there should be.
