[history]
Wall Street Journal readers and writers lost a friend, a mentor and an inspiration yesterday with the death at age 66 of our columnist and Editor Emeritus Robert L. Bartley. Robert Bartley (and his predecessor Vermont Royster) were making the world safe for conservatives before Rush Limbaugh was around. The editorial page is, to the Wall Street Journal, what the centerfold is to Playboy.

Bartley editorially supported Operation Rescue by opposing the use of RICO against OR and by opposing the FACE Act (Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances) which limited free speech rights of pro-lifers only. He will be missed.
