How do you think that the US gained Texas and later 1/2 of Mexico!By sending in General Winfield Scott and winning the Mexican War?

We took Texas because the Mexicans invited American settlers into a sparsely populated Area. The American-Texans became a majority and rebelled to get their country. Texas then joined the US.
Meanwhile Americans were legally and illegally pouring into the area between Texas and the PAcific and Oregon.
We took California because these armed settlers, many illegally there, rallied behind Captain John Fremont and then General Zachary Taylor to take California.
The Veracruz to Mexico city campaign was a brilliant manueever, but we only took the Southwest because there were so many Americans already there routing the Mexicans.
Go read the Whig attacks on the war including those of Lincoln.
The simple fact is that we took the land by immigration, rebellion, and invasion.
We cannot allow the MExicans to regain it that way!
