You're right about the helicopter activity. I noticed that too.

"Now I see that it was an earthquake. OK, so now what? Do we get to send the hurricane back? What about the snow? It's no fair to get snow and earthquakes. I mean, what kind of place is this? "That was funny. : )
Since I live about 10 miles from the San Andreas fault which was just reported as being the most stressed point of the whole state I like to keep things on the light side!! Sort of like whistling past the graveyard.

Ok, I'll bite Howlin... Why do you have the logo in your tag line for an old 1971 Auburn-Alabama game?
Are you a Tiger fan or is there some other reason I can't decipher for it?
BTW..I have an old 45 record of the highlights of that game. My grandpa played for Alabama Polytechnical Institute (29-30)

I have 2 friends in Raleigh that felt it. One said if you were outside walking or in your car you probably wouldn't have felt it but both said their homes shook. They are the reason I came looking for this thread. :)

Would that be the Whittier quake in October 1987? My first one.
I had just moved to CA, my office was on the 9th floor of a building facing the ocean in Long Beach. At about 7:00am-7:30am, the blinds behind me began to "slide" back and forth, hitting the sides of the window. I turned around, thinking, "Are the window cleaners back?" (They had been there the day before.) Surprise! No window cleaners, and now the whole frikin' building is rockin' and rollin'! Woohoo!
Much more to this story, including calling my wife in Pittsburgh and leaving this message "I'm OK". (Hehehe.) Of course, frantic calls to CA to see what I meant. (Hehehe, again.) Then, the aftershocks, while we were at our apartment that night (she was flying out that day, anyway)... in the middle of the night... both of bolt out of bead and head for the door (without the other!)... Two Western PA transplants experiencing an earthquake... a big quake. We still laugh today about our experience.

I'm orginally from California and am in Alexandria, VA Same here! I left California in late August.
Didn't feel any quake here, either.

Bailey Bridge MS in Chesterfield county evacuated due to structural damage, and damage to buildings in Nelson County, Va. Just wait until tomorrow. You may experience a strange phenomena. Sometime an earthquake can have a delayed recoil effect, within 24 hours later, epic massive earthquake swarms can occur, causing liquefaction to a wide region.
This causes the ground to turn to an "oatmeal" like substance and homes can sink and tall building just "bob" around in it, like a buoy in a lake, sometimes sinking completely.
If the swarms are strong enough, it can change the course of rivers and cause ground water in wells to shoot straight out of the ground, at the same time rivers can flood over their banks. This effect will generally burst all water pipes within hundreds of miles.
I'm not saying this will happen, but you never know.
I watched my neighbors home get completely swallowed up by the liquefaction. It was as if it was swallowed by oatmeal.
What was weird, 20 minutes later it came back up to the surface.

You posted within 4 minutes of the event. The AP story appears to be more than a half hour after the event. Not the first time nor the last time that FR will scoop the wire services!

Oh, shoot! I forgot I had that there! I was responding to a Alabama fan a little bit ago and couldn't resist!
Although I grew up in ACC country, my uncle was a scout for Auburn and I could sing the Auburn fight song before I could say mine name -- almost!
And I love SEC football! What a great game that was!

I've heard of that, and its interesting, especially since I work in the highest buildings in Richmond. My wife called to ask if everyone was Ok, and my co-workers called to tell me about how bad the building rattled.
I live about a mile from the James River and about 3 miles from the Appomattox, south of Richmond.
Guess tomorrow I'll concentrate on those trips I've been needing to take out in the field.

California and Alaska have by far the most earthquakes on earth, or maybe there are just better seismographs in the US.
