Actually, this is a brilliant move by Gore. 1) He adds support to a candidate who will get blown-out in 2004, clearing the way for Al's latest "re-invention" of himself in 2008 (as Frum suggests), and 2) by helping Dean get the nomination, he will break the Clinton death-grip on the DNC.

I'm willing to take this one step further. Say Hillary decides to run this election to "save" the party. If she loses (please let her lose), who is standing in the wings for 2008? Al Gore. Al has nothing to lose and everything to gain by going with Dean.
