This is proceeding apace. And the additional good news: no injuries to hunters (the protestors screamed about the danger to humans).

I am surprised how much press this story has gotten. It was on CNN's crawl last night (spotted while stopping for Laura Bush on Larry King.)

"I've waited 33 years to shoot one in New Jersey," he said. "It's a great thing. I don't get that.

Protesters, some in bear masks, Not too bright to be dressed up as the prey... but them anti-hunters never were too bright. My only prayer is that they don't run into any of the idiot hunters (yep, they do exist) that will shoot at anything that moves. Any incident will give the lefties some ammo (ironic ain't it) to use against gun owners and hunters.

hundreds of hunters armed with shotguns and muzzle-loading rifles tromped through a foot of snow... If I'm going after bear I damn sure wouldn't use a shotgun or a muzzle rifle. I think the idiot who wrote this doesn't know jack about hunting or guns. Typical liberal of course.

During the hunt, did they find out for sure whether a bear craps in the woods or not?

As a NJ resident, I'm glad to see the hunt finally taking place. The bears have become more bold each year. And regardless of what the activists say, there is no such thing as a "bear-proof" garbage can.

Don't they also have to release a bunch of polar bears for diversity's sake and to avoid claims of ursine discrmination?

Why are they carrying signs? Everybody knows bears can't read.

I understand that this hunt is to cull an overpopulation of bears. But I'm just curious. Is bear meat tasty? Or do the hunters even use the meat?

we have laws in nc about the intentional practice of interfering with a hunt. these folks would be arrested in nc if they interfered.

Two things:
First, regarding the protester in the photo. When did New Jersey become HER state? In my state of New Jersey, and in my county of Hunterdon, we're ok with this hunt.
Second, a word of advice for the protesters in bear masks:
DUCK!
To: Pharmboy
Opponents of the hunt had other views. "This is an extermination, not a hunt," said Steve Ember, a member of the executive committee of the Sierra Club. The Sierra Club isn't pro-hunting anymore....
