My department began using 'beanbag' equipped shotguns about two years ago. These have saved a couple lives already. They work. One guy who tried his dangnest to get shot to death ended up with five nasty bruises on his thighs instead of on the ME's slab. He was major drugged-up, and it took five beanbags to convince him that he was in actual pain. Cogent bad guys are convinced more readily.
The trick is to use this force appropriately. Training is on-going and getting honed to a keen edge. All good

Finally someone understands the concept.
I want a couple of bean bags for my first shot in my bedroom defense weapon.

Well said.
I think there is a definite place for non lethal weapons. For example the officers on Diallo could have begun with non lethal force. Half could have had live fire weapons and only fired if he didn't go down with NL.
Reemember that NL can and does kill on occasion. Seems a lot of times cops shoot bullets when they could shoot NL charges. They really should be given a better chance.
But the mainstay must remain lethal force. This serves as a real deterrent. Otherwise why not run. The worse that will happen is you will go to prison and you are going there anyway. Maybe this is why more big cities are not going nonlethal. The crook must wonder. "Will this be my last night on earth if I run?"
