They don't, for the most part, understand that. Their chatterers in the opinion pages certainly don't, but I think guys like Gephardt and Z. Miller do...they made noise about McAuliffe after the 2002 election...McAuliffe counter-attacked with stories from "experts" showing the election was "lost" due to "talk radio." In other words, not by McAuliffe, his dumping of money in Florida, and the Bush-Bashing talking points he assured local candidates were winning arguments.
