There are plenty of Lennon's songs I like, but I've always found this one to be especially insipid.

Insipid is a good word, but puts it mildly. Intellectually insulting feels better.

Actually "Imagine" is one of my faves. You can micro-analyze the meaning of the lyrics but overall it is an excellent song. BTW, my favorite moment in the Quantum Leap series was when the Scott Bakula character leaped back into himself as a youngster and then sang "Imagine" to his sister to prove that he really was from the future. His sister after hearing the song believed him since in the year he leapt back to, Imagine hadn't even been sung yet.

It's villainous - platitudes that mask the iron fist of Big Brother waiting to smash the individual. If I wanted to be a successful Dictator of the World, the first thing I would do is encourage my future serfs to start thinking like these lyrics.

When the UN building and head of mission got blown to smithereens in Baghdad a few months back, they played this song at the funeral. I'm not kidding.

The song is today an anthem of atheist commies.

What most bothers me about that disgusting new age paean is that it is internally contradictory. Its purpose is to inspire an idealism that seeks to put an end to idealism ("nothing to kill or die for"). How many have been inspired to kill or die to bring this about?

"We hope some day you'll join us" and do what? Create a world where there is no longer any "us" to join because all goals have been eliminated?

And just who are "we" and "us," anyway? David Rockefeller? Walter Cronkite (the owl of the Bohemian Grove)? Force X? Sauron? Le roi du monde???

My theory is that Lennon wrote the song to scare people into the John Birch Society. [jk]
