That's what I thought!

There was one thing, though--at least at the times I was pregnant. (Of course, they change everything around all the time!) Seems to me that the doctor didn't want to actually do a pelvic in the last month or so of pregnancy, b/c they feared infection or something?

So, I mean, would they have wanted to do a pap smear, which requires a speculum, that close to the end of pregnancy?

From Google:

"A highly effective solution is now available to physicians and parents wishing to minimize and prevent the risk of Group B Streptococcus (GBS)
in newborns: the IDI-Strep B™ test.

"Offering a heretofore unknown level of sensitivity
and specificity, the IDI-Strep B™ test identifies Group B
Streptococcus in pregnant women at the
time of delivery in less than one hour. The test can also be used at any other stage of pregnancy."

So, maybe this was the test Laci's dr. preformed which also captured her DNA.

Well, they are checking the cervix anyway at that time, so if the doctor just wanted to check off her chart as having had a pap done by the end of that year, they might have just done it. I imagine that if Laci had shown any signs of the cervix opening they would not have risked anything, but it takes just 1 second with a swab and really shouldn't risk starting labor or infection. Laci was surely allowed to have sex at that time, and that (especially with Scott!) would have risked a lot more.
