On April 22, 2000, President Clinton, backed by the public and by each branch of government -- executive, judicial, legislative -- Huh? Is this writer sure about this?

I didn't get that either.

Actually the public was by and large in favor of having Elian returned to his father in Cuba. The author of this piece corrctly points out why this was so. Also I vaguely remember seeing Sheila Jackson Lee on TV denouncing the idea of making Elian a citizen. Evil whore.
FWIW, seeing the raid that April morning completed my transformation from an apathetic dem to a staunch conservative

Most people believed the father "wanted" him. Fidel made Mr. Gonzalez want him. Originally Mr. Gonzalez was OK with Elian being in Miami.
