Unfortunately it won't happen. The coaches and ADs want it, but the college presidents don't, because the BCS teams split a heckuva lot of money (8 teams splitting like $45+ million, while the other 40-some teams split like $30 million).
I even heard a local college president say this weekend that playoffs would cut into finals, and extra games would stress the players. I about fell out of my chair - that same college has their men's basketball team playing in New York this week (during finals), and the women are also on the road this week (during finals). Many other sports play through finals (including I believe Baseball). College basketball plays a longer season, more games, and more travel (and usually further distances) than football. Division I-AA, II, III, all have football playoffs (during finals).
I wonder when people will get tired of hearing excuses for why there isn't a playoff system. This is the only sport in a single division in the NCAA that isn't decided by a playoff system.
I guess the fans don't mind when a USC doesn't get into the championship game or a Nebraska does, because they obviously aren't putting enough pressure on the schools.
