And the kid died anyway.  If the money had been spent on fighting malaria, hundreds -maybe thousands of lives could have been saved.  There are so many people who just don't think when they donate.  Instead they go for the 'feel-good' publicity splashes.

An interesting point. A good friend of mine had lymphoma, we (our town) raised over a million bucks for his treatment knowing that it was probably a hopeless cause. I guess we just had to give it our all for him. In retrospect, that money would surely have benefited those suffering from malaria, herpes, gonorrhea, or any other treatable illness. We were very illogical...but one of ours needed treatment, and you stick up for your own within the community (that is how we saw it anyways). Your point is valid. That money would have been better spent, since my sweet natured friend died despite our efforts, but we had to do what we could despite the knowledge that it probably would not make a difference.
