EU guarded over lifting China weapons embargo

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana has reacted with reservation at a German proposal to lift a 14-year-old weapons embargo against China. The proposal was floated earlier this week by the German chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, during a visit to China.

Mr Solana said the proposal has opened a debate but will have to be decided on by all EU member states. He added that in recent years China has made huge strides economically, but human rights violations are still taking place.

The weapons embargo was imposed in 1989 after the Chinese authorities quashed a student uprising at Tiananmen Square killing hundreds of civilians.
