The role of the government should be to help people with problems, not ship them off to jail, and make their problems worse.

Everyone has problems. The poor inner city child who joins a gang and then kills 3 people has problems. I'm sure the thief who steals cars has "problems". So exactly WHO would go to jail?

So exactly WHO would go to jail? Violent Criminals, Rapists etc. should go to jail. People with drug problems who commit violent crimes while on drugs or to obtain drugs should go to jail (this includes drunk drivers). All I'm saying is that the punishment should reflect the crime. If someone is caught purchasing drugs, or in posession... but they did NOT commit any other crime, I beleive that person should be sent to rehab, that's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it. The innercity child you mentioned who shoots and kills 3 people falls into that category, and so does the person who illegally supplied that child with the gun. In all seriousness, I hope that Rush is better, and I don't believe he should do jail time for what he has done. If drugs were supplied to him illegally, then perhaps the suppliers should in some way be held accountable. Have a good weekend =)
