As all Freepers know, media bias is a pretty strong force. Maybe Muslims denouncing the behavior simply is not news worthy. I have read in FR posts about a Saudi cleric (!) saying "We have created a monster" and similar. They do show up from time to time.

I think the inability to actually define factions may be an issue. Sunni, Shiite, Sufi, Wahabbi, what are the brand names of Islam?

That is a very valid point. At the risk of seeming like a tin-foil hat type, the ultimate goals of the more extreme left (of which the media is often a powerful and sometimes unwitting tool), can only be achieved through a complete upheaval of the existing order. It is in their best interest to foment chaos in every aspect of the current structure. If people can be convinced that there are fundamental problems with the existing order, they will be more receptive to radical changes.
