I saw a post on FR just today where a Muslim leader said that there are two brands of Islam; one which embraces violence as means to an end and pursues a mindless fundamentalism. The other is more peaceful. These forms of Islam are at war around the world.

Isn't that sufficient condemnation?

Perhaps, if they are actively preaching against the fundamentalism in their mosques, in addition to providing soundbites for reporters. Putting their money where their mouths are, so to speak.

First, I thought I read somewhere that there were 4 main bodies of islamist philosophy, not that I know what the names are. If there is one well defined, recognized variety of islam that is homocidal in nature and is actively opposed by other variants of islam, should we start calling that variant by name instead of condemning all islam with a broad brush? If it is shiite, or wahabbism (however it is called and spelled, or some other specific "dialect" X of islam, can we start specifically saying "X, a religion of Peace" instead of islam?

In addition, should we start calling on the other flavors of islam to specifically denounce this violent flavor?

It certainly isn't. If Baptists were planting bombs in the parking lots of mosques, and Billy Graham was praising it and calling for more while saying muslims eat the livers of Christian children as part of their Ramadan feasting, then other Baptists would be expected to specifically name, condemn and openly excommunicate Rev Graham, and demand that he be banned from every Baptist pulpit in the world.

If it is true that Hooper is in fact somehow enraged about memorials to suicide-killers in Ramallah, or the vile Jew-hating filth of the Arab press, then let me say that he is far too inarticulate to serve in his current post, claiming to "represent" the muslims community in the US.

So how come nobody knows where the battlefields are?
