(East Providence-AP) -- A billboard sign urging people to go vegetarian that shows the Virgin Mary cradling a chicken carcass is coming down.
The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PEE-Tah) paid three-thousand dollars to rent the billboard off Interstate 195 for a month. The sign was put up a week ago.
Some religious leaders have complained it's offensive and the sign has been defaced with spray paint.
The company that owns the billboard says the sign will be taken down over the next few days and P-E-T-A will get part if its payment back.
Robert Murray, co-owner of Massachusetts-based Murray Outdoor Communications, doesn't want the company in the middle of debate over the sign.
Murray says he sees no problem with the sign.
P-E-T-A spokesman Bruce Friedrich said the group is disappointed but plans to put it on billboards in other cities around the country.

"They go about this in the wrong way. I don't understand why they don't see it. They take symbols important to people they want to "educate" and blaspheme them to make their point. Just makes me want to kick their arses and eat a lot of meat."
I am beginning to think that they do see it. They know it is insulting and they also know they have NO chance of changing anyone's mind. But they are playing to the big contributors ($$$) that enjoy the controversy.

the only reference to animals are as beasts of burden and food ... and sacrifice!

How about PETA doing this tasteless one?
A chicken looped with barbed wire hanging on a fence?
They wouldn't dare because it would offend their constituents and the wrong politically correct group.

Come over for Christmas. My mother makes a honey ham that will make you eat your fingers. What kinda of BBQ sauce does she use on her spotted owls? I used a most wicked honey/tabasco mix that makes the owls tast like week old chicken.

Homemade. Sometimes she'll use this volcanic pepper sauce stuff my grandmother brings up from Trinidad. Not only spotted owls, but makes protected Canadian geese take like buffalo wings.

I actually had to laugh over this one, even tho' I admit it's highly offensive.
Kudos to Fox News for airing the anti-PETA ads.

Trashing meat & Christianity on the same billboard - for them, it's a two-fer.

People, this is a HATE CRIME. PETA deliberately set out to offend Catholics. They chose the city because of its Catholic majority.
This is a Hate Crime, and it will be ignored.
To: NYer
It was all a misunderstanding. PeTA thought she 'the blessed Vegan Mary'.

According to God, we have dominion over the beasts of the field. If you READ Genesis, you will note that he gave man dominion over the animals BUT said to eat the seed and fruit of the tree! "Dominion" did NOT mean to eat them.

Do think PETA has a special Bible were the word "lamb" appears it is replaced with "chicken"?

People For the Ethical Treatment of Aminals uses pretty offensive tactics. Remember their spoof the Got Milk? ad - Got Beer? Yuk.
