One thing everyone is missing too is that Dec 12 is a holiday for Mexicans...Is that the day Mexico officially attached itself to the Amercan taxpayers' teat?
To: DumpsterDiver
It's the Virgin of Guadalupe Day --- many Mexicans won't show up to work that day anyhow --- so it's a good day for them to pick.

It's the Virgin of Guadalupe Day ..."Thanks, I didn't know that.
I'm going to Google to see if I can find out who the patron saint of boycotts is.

So, "Latino" in this case, refers to all of them. Grammer, schmammer! Let's just call them Pig Latins.

You are correct. When a group is both male and female, the masculine is used.

The word is getting around. Wendy Garcia, 19, is neither going to work nor going shopping on Friday, Dec. 12. Ditto for Ana Flores, 46, and Reynaldo Guzman, 32. These Latino immigrants -- angered by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's repeal on Wednesday of the driver's license bill that would have given illegal immigrants the right to drive -- will participate in a planned "boycott": a one-day economic strike in which Latinos are encouraged to not go to work, school or buy anything.
I think I will email this little tidbit of info to all management staff where I work. I will prove interesting to see who "protests" and who calls in "sick."

The fact that we still have an illegal immigration problem despite being on an bloody cold and miserable island in the North Sea as opposed to a sunny paradise having a huge land border with a source of eager illegals shows the difficulty of the problem, I agree. Here the problem is that these people claim "political Asylum" and it's hard and costly to go through the appeals process to deport them. I guess the problem in the US is sheer scale although I still would have thought that with sufficient political will you could at least stop illegal immigrants from using your benefits system.

From what I see most US hispanics ---especially those who have been in the US for many generations --- many descended from Spaniards that once ruled over this territory don't feel all that much a part of the current-day Mexico. They might have some traditions from the Spaniards like posadas and luminarias at Christmas but we're really never part of Mexico ---especially since the Revolution. A lot of the families here were driven out of Mexico during the Revolution and pretty much have no ties with that country. I don't think a single one of them flies or displays the Mexican flag.

I say if the economy is truly improving slightly, slowly, it is because we've stopped many immigrants from coming in and deported some illegals. The more we do, the more the economy will improve.
