I agree with you all the way.

However, they were dumping fuel. Why would they do that? The Bonanza's wheels have had a problem sticking for years. Everyone in the aviation world knows that. They were probably preparing for a hard (also called scratch) landing and ran out of gas. Purely speculative here.

And that might well be all this is; however, you have to admit, it's peculiar how "unlucky" people are who cross their paths.....and I think, in part, this is also why they get away with so much...people are afraid of them, IMHO.
