Billboard Depicts Virgin Mary Cradling Chicken Carcass

Group Picks R.I. To Launch Vegetarianism Campaign

PROVIDENCE -- A billboard in Providence, R.I., is urging people to go vegetarian with the image of Virgin Mary cradling a chick carcass, according to a Local 6 News report.

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals launched the campaign in Rhode Island because it has the highest percentage of Catholics in the United States.

The billboard can be seen by motorists near exit 4 on Interstate 195 in East Providence and includes the phrase, "Go Vegetarian. It's an Immaculate Conception."

PETA said its message is designed to highlight that animals raised for food are mistreated and that vegetarianism combats the practice.

Someone apparently upset with the billboard this week spray painted "Shame!!" on it.

I love freedom of speech.

Works for me.

I don't see this as offensive. Obviously not ment to be anti-Catholic seeing as how this area of Rhode Island has the highest percentage of Catholics in the United States.

Seems this ad is targeted at Catholics.

Of course if they made a billboard of Allah carrying a dead chicken the "fatwas" couldn't be announced fast enough.

Or let's see. Maybe we place a controversial ad, in an area where it will offend the most people, and garner the attention of the national press, so PETA gets the most free advertising? They've been working this scam for years, and the idiots/accomplices in the press just keep going right along with it. Look up the old PETA articles that are similar to this one. Everytime, there is a PETA spokesperson who makes a non-radical, public relations type statement in the middle of the story.

Has anyone from PETA explained the significance of the cross-hairs on the O in GO?

Is it a rifle sight? Is it the Zodiac Killer's signature? Is it a pagan symbol? Is it a reflection of the Christian cross?
