US Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz requested a meeting with Geneva Initiative architects Yossi Beilin and Yasser Abed Rabbo on Friday when the two are in Washington to meet US Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Wolfowitz also praised the authors of the People's Voice diplomatic plan, former Shin Bet chief Ami Ayalon and Palestinian academic Sari Nusseiba.
Officials in Jerusalem connected with the Geneva initiative said various Washington groups, including the pro-Israeli Washington lobby AIPAC have met with advisors to US President George W. Bush to get the Powell meeting cancelled.
The Ayalon Nusseiba initiative, which has received the support of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, among others, calls for two states for two peoples based on the June 4, 1967 borders.
The Palestinian state would be demilitarized and the international community would guarantee its security and independence. It would absorb Palestinian refugees who wish to live there, while the international community would compensate those willing to resettle elsewhere.
Jerusalem would be 'an open city,' with Israeli sovereignty over Jewish neighborhoods, Palestinian sovereignty over Arab neighborhoods, and neither side controlling the disputed holy sites. Once the borders of a Palestinian state were agreed upon, all Israeli settlers would leave.
