Reporter: "You did say that to me when we talked one on one (Sept. 6, 2003) that you would consider a package deal that would have included a requirement of insurance for those people that are going to get the drivers license. That I know is something that you believe in. Do you also believe that all undocumented immigrants will be able to get a drivers license if they present insurance, if they have a background check, fingerprints?

Arnold:
"Let's do it the right way, let's make every Californian happy and let's make the undocumented immigrants happy."Will somebody, anybody ask Gov. Arnold which Constitutional Amendment authorizes such a premise??

Assembly Votes to Repeal SB 60!
Today the Assembly voted 64-9 to fully repeal SB 60. This is more than the necessary 2/3rds vote. Governor Schwarzenegger will sign the bill. As soon as it is chaptered. SB 60 will be dead!
This is a great success for those of you involved in this referendum effort. This referendum, unlike an initiative, could only repeal SB 60. So, as a result of the Legislature's actions, our effort is ending.
But this doesn't end the fight. Senator Gil Cedillo has pledged to fight for another law that rewards illegals with legal licenses as early as this January.
Save Our License will remain as long as we have resources to keep up the fight.
In the coming weeks we will keep you informed about SB 60 and what we can do to stop it and any new bills like it.
Thanks for all your hard work!
Sincerely,
Mike Spence, President
California Republican Assembly

It doesn't make sense if the majority of Californians run around and hate the idea of undocumented immigrants having drivers licenses because there is no background check, because it doesn't solve the problem with insurance. Let's do it the right way, let's make every Californian happy and let's make the undocumented immigrants happy." ~ Arnold Schwarzenegger - December 1st, 2003

So...when Arnold tries to push through licenses for illegals, adding "background checks" or whatever, what happens then? Another recall.

Since just being an illegal is a felony, apparently being a criminal isn't considered part of a background check.

Gotta agree with you.
I can't get around the analogy (mine own) that it's like saying that someone breaks into my house to burgle; but if I can just run a background check on him, he should get a license to continue to burgle.
As soon as the "background check" shows that the guy is here (hel-lo?) ILLEGALLY, he should be THROWN THE HECK OUT.
I hope Schwarzenegger, who I think is generally doing a bang-up job, comes around to that.

While I'm encouraged by the first sentence, I'm bemused by the second. Schwarzenegger campaigned that he wouldn't "come around to that," and you voted for him. Schwarzenegger has said all along that he doesn't want the Illegals out and that he does want to give them CDLs with proper securtiy measures and background checks. One of two things will happen. Schwarzenegger and Cedillo will work out a compromise which gives CDLs to Illegals, or they'll make a bipartisan appeal to get the Feds to reclassify the Illegals as "guest workers," and then give them the CDLs. You also have to wonder about Schwarzenegger's repeated emphasis on giving the Illegals auto insurance. Was there anything in SB60 that denied them auto insurance?

Well, it looks like Arnold is becoming a true politician, going back on campaign promises already. Illegals should be rounded up and sent back home, not given drivers licenses. I really thought Arnold would have a backbone and stand up to these special interest groups. Guess I was wrong...again.

You are wrong, Arnold isn't going back on campaign promises. Throughout his campaign Schwarzenegger consistently said that he wants CDLs for Illegals with background checks, that they should not be deported, and that he wants to lobby Washington to legalize them with some sort of "guest worker" status.

This is the reason I voted for Tom McClintock, I knew Arnold would agree to anything George Bush wants. Bush wants amnesty and entitlements to illegal aliens, Arnold will help it along.

I'm really not all THAT worried about Schwarzenegger. Consider the possibility that he is bullsh***ing the Left on this one, leading them along a-purpose, knowing all the while that he's not going to sign a bill giving DLs to people whose presence in the state is not itself legal.
If he is sincere, I STILL believe that his more pragmatic handlers will make him realize, "Even if you really want to do this, don't, because you'll be seen as breaking trust with the 70% of Californians who think it's lunacy. You'll blow your political capital without doing any real good."

So, in your best case scenario, I should trust that he's lying? Setting aside that bit of cognitive dissonance; lying to what end? SB60 was going to be overturned by refernedum without any lying. There is no need for it. An overwhelming, bipartisan majority of Californians is opposed to CDLs for Illegals under any circumstances. The lying, if it's lying, serves no good purpose, and once again concedes the terms of the debate to the Democrats, in that amidst his stated positions (are they all lies?), Schwarzenegger says he wants Illegals to be legalized, and to get CDLs and insurance. If he is sincere, I STILL believe that his more pragmatic handlers will make him realize, "Even if you really want to do this, don't, because you'll be seen as breaking trust with the 70% of Californians who think it's lunacy. You'll blow your political capital without doing any real good."
If he is sincere, he is wildly out of touch. Yet in this fall back scenario, I'm supposed to trust unelected, unkown, and unaccountable pragmatists to save Arnold from himself? Neither scenario is especially confidence-instilling.

I hope you are right about B/S-ing the left, but I doubt it. Arnold's position is the same as when he campaigned. Do you really believe that Cedillo would get every Dem except 9 to vote against a bill he introduced, a bill for which he staged a very public signing, a bill which he dedicated to his deceased wife, if there had not been any deal made to reintroduce & pass a revised SB60 later?
Both Republicans & Democrats, all the way to the national level, are afraid of this going to the voters & having a public rejection by 60% or more of the population. They want to try get a bill through the legislature & signed by the governor with a little public debate as possible.

There will be a new referendum petition on any illegal drivers licence bill bo matter what restrictions they might try to justify it with.
