Nearly a quarter century ago, Lester C. Thurow warned in "The Zero-Sum Society" that the stagnant US economy would have to make painful structural changes to preserve growth and rising living standards. Now he is making a similar argument about the global economy in a new book, "Fortune Favors the Bold."

Idleness -- the successful society not only educates every person to the limits of their intellect, but also motivates them to achievement and success. This is best done through psychological means, such as modern managerial psychology, advertising, informational media, psychotropic pharmaceuticals, etc., rather than coercion.
