"Does that mean there is hope for the Democrats? :)"

Only if they can throw off the socialist/evil/clintonoids and other destructive anti-American elements. I welcome a LOYAL opposition because one-party rule is very dangerous and leads to corruption at all levels.

From the report:

Additionally, the subcommittees' review of military documents provided at their request and the results of interviews with persons involved in this matter clearly demonstrate that there was a continuing concern from senior military officers that JTF-6 was providing support to non-counterdrug activities, and that the Special Operations Command was attempting to reinforce resistance to this recurring misuse of military counterdrug assets and funds, referred to as ``cheating.'' Given that the military assistance to ATF for Waco under dubious circumstances appears to not have been an anomaly, and the fact that Operation Alliance's jurisdiction has significantly expanded since Waco, the subcommittees recommend that the General Accounting Office investigate the activities of Operation Alliance.

Emphasis mine. This spells out the levels of concern exhibited by those tracking this activity in the Government. Imagine how this looked to knowledgeable persons on the outside of the infrastructure looking in, even with fragments of knowledge it was not difficult to imagine a conspiracy which ignored the law and waged covert war on American Citizens under the guise of law enforcement.

Keep in mind that even the most seemingly ridiculous conspiracy theories were not born so much of paranoia as an attempt to make sesnse of events which did not make sense under the rule or color of law. Add in Randy Weaver and Gordon Kahl, and it seemed that the Government was waging war on conservative, Christian, rural, (often Caucasian) gunowners.

Combine this with the common thread that armed confrontation was used in each instance when a peaceful arrest was emminently possible, in Waco despite known forewarning of the Davidians, and the picture becomes highly questionable. The conclusion that the Clinton Administration was waging war on selected Americans did not take much effort.

When things do not make sense, you either ignore them, or do your best to make sense of them.

Allegations of white supremacist beliefs, child molestation, etc. stuck in the press like flypaper, and even though all sorts of deviants are allowed lenient sentences or parade with 'pride' down main streets, those allegations were used to morally justify the Government's actions in the public mindset.

Sadly, for the majority of Americans looking to justify what they felt was a grevious wrong, the party line was easy to swallow, one would feel no distress, everything was OK. Washington D.C. was not Nuremburg in 1938, everything was going to be all right.

Similarly, it was easy (in fact, necessary) to dismiss any concerns, and the people who held them were instant social outcasts in some circles.

The idea that our Government, in the land of the free and home of the brave, may have committed a most foul mass murder right before the cameras is almost as difficult to accept as the idea that the Waco raid (and its outcome) were somehow justified.

Worse yet, the coverups later, done for political purposes to take the heat off of the liberals and put the Right on the defensive, have left a legacy which includes 9/11.

Joe, good post. The trigger for military involvement was for one of the Operation Alliance civilian agencies to request assistance from JTF-6 for counter-drug operations. Unfortunately, the military, in typical "can do" fashion, took any request with an assertion of drug involvement and responded. When it turned out that drug involvement at Waco was likely bogus and at best questionable, the military significantly tightened up the procedures.

The issue was primarily money. Congress had appropriated funds for military counter-drug operations. Civilian agencies had learned that if they could hang their requests for support on a counter-drug angle, no matter how tenuous, that they would get "free" assistance.

Also unfortunately, as you address in your post, many people have taken bits and pieces of this information and developed completely overblown conspiracy theories of the Army's involvement--of which the Wes Clark chapter is the latest in the story.

armed confrontation was used ... when a peaceful arrest was emminently possible

That is the real problem with Waco.

Since the media is giving Clark a pass on this one I think that's the biggest indicator that Dean won't make it...

...Dean is out

Clark may now win, if he plays his cards well. Bush has now shown his true colors this week. Bush's Border policy might become Bush's Biggest Blunder. Bush is a RINO. Dean is losing ground, Clark did get a pass on Waco. If a major terrorist attack now hits the US, a Clark/Clinton or Clinton/Clark ticket could very well win.
