My question to you is which one is the closer comparison Iraq to Vietnam or Germany/Japan to Iraq?

Neither.

But let us say it is closer to Germany and Japan.

If so the American establishment (military and civilian) is not the same one that existed in 1945.

Remember that USA was a colonial power before WW2. Let us not forget General MacArthur was a colonial offices of the Philipines for decades. The USA had a history of "nation" building right down to invasions and occupations of Caribbean and Central American nations that lasted decades. Where Americans had years of experiance in colonial duties and putting down colonial guerilla warfare.

We have no such experiance in this generation and have not had this experiance for at least 2 or 3 generations.
