LONDON (Reuters) - At least four and possibly as many as eight members of a Spanish intelligence team were killed on Saturday in an attack on their convoy south of Baghdad, a reporter from Britain's Sky News television said.

David Bowden said in a report from Baghdad after returning from the scene that he saw four bodies and that locals said eight were killed in total and another two people taken prisoner. Spanish officials said in Madrid an eight-strong team had been attacked and it was unclear how many were hurt.

"We were actually driving from the town of Hilla, which is just south of Baghdad, and we saw these men lying dead on the floor (ground) by the side of the road after the ambush," Bowden said.

"We were told by locals there that...about 30 minutes before they'd attacked a convoy of three vehicles. They pulled the people out of the vehicles. They told us that in fact they'd killed eight people and they'd captured two others.

"I only saw with my own eyes four dead bodies on the road.

"We filmed for a couple of minutes and then we became the focus of the mob's attention. They were shouting praise to Saddam (Hussein) and we disappeared pretty quickly."

We need to wait for confirmation about the hostages. The "locals" at the scene who made the claim appeared to be ~ a dozen useful idiot teens waving their fists for the cameras, probably paid Saddam Info Ministry extras with plenty of 'work' experience.

Seven Spanish Intelligence Officers Killed in Iraq

MADRID, Spain — Seven members of Spain's military intelligence agency were killed and one was injured on a highway south of Baghdad (search) Saturday when the convoy they were traveling in was ambushed, Defense Minister Federico Trillo confirmed.

The eight-member team from the National Intellegence Center (search) was traveling in two vehicles when it was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and rifle fire at Al Mamudiya (search), 18 miles south of Baghdad, as they returned from a mission, he said in comments broadcast live to the nation.

The attack took place in an area under command of the U.S. Third Brigade.

Journalists for Sky News, Fox News' sister network in Britain, saw four bodies in the road and a jubilant crowd of Iraqis kicking them.

Sky News gave an eyewitness account of a mob of 20 to 30 people rejoicing over the bodies. One correspondent saw a child of eight or nine pretending to kick a body. Another person was seen with a foot on the chest of one of the bodies. Shouts of "Praise to Saddam!" were heard.

The civilians then reportedly turned hostile to the journalists and they were forced to leave.

Spokesmen for Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar (search) said the government won't be intimidated nor deterred from its mission of attempting to help Iraq achieve peace and democracy following the long dictatorship of Saddam Hussein and the U.S.-led invasion last March that toppled it.

"We are grateful to all the people who serve Spain and Spain's democracy beyond our borders fighting terrorism and guaranteeing freedom and democracy," Justice Minister Jose Maria Michavila said.

Make posters out of the film of the teens celebrating the Spanish deaths. Caption the posters with commentary on their lack of manliness and un-Islamic behavior. A little latter see that one (and only one) turns up dead. The others and indeed the whole town will start to feel differently about these savage demonstrations and then perhaps the savage murders that proceed them. Each incident must be looked upon as an opportuniity to modify the public's perception and behavior.

Franco was a murderous despot who would put Saddam to shame. Why you would speculate as how he would have handled thinks and implicitly honor him, seems curious to me.

Franco was a general in a civil war, where both sides were guilty of murder. Had he lost the winners would have probably committed just as many attrocities as he did. At the time both sides were supported by two murderous dictators. I don't think Franco's Spain would have tolerated what occured in todays Iraq. It was the no nonsence retribution aspect that I was looking at. Lets see how the current government responds to this incident. By the way, Franco couldn't have been all bad (murderous despot) he brought Spain into NATO. But then again we've had other murderous despots as allies. (i.e. Chen Kai Chek a SEATO member.)(Who I understand killed probably more people that the total population of Spain.) Strange how we ended up with a "facist" ally against communism.
When you have incidents as these ocurring you begin to wonder how long before incidents like My Lai occur.(Remember the reports of all those smiling faces of the villagers as our guys tripped booby traps?) Unfortunately if we responded today in the same way that would play into their hands.
I guess I could have used King Ferdinand from Spain as example too but Franco is the most recent spanish ruler with an iron hand that I could come with. If you are looking to find pictures on my walls of Franco you are wasting your time. But I do have a large 1876 steel engraving of Lincoln and an autographed picture of U.S. Grant.
