Heat 'n beat?

Just a bit past that. It had to do with stitch welding in a bit of an arc, like tightening the lug bolts on a tire with a combination of slow cooling and peening.

Yep. Sounds like welding cast. Weld a little, and beat on it awhile, then weld a little more and beat on it. Stitch welding in about the same pattern you'd use to tighten head bolts. Here's one of my favorite stress relieving links.
