I think the article got her last name wrong. Miss America 2003 is the gal whose pix I posted.

There seems to be some confusion over what her last name is. I've seen as Harold on most sites.

Later she clambered atop a Stryker armored vehicle and chatted with a squad from the brigade's 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment. Egads. She did pose on the hood.
To: sd-joe
It makes you feel uneasy because there is a threat of the entire brigade becoming biological warfare casualties. Hope those Saudi contractors are checked out and carefully supervised
5000 guys with the green apple quickstep is definitely a bio-hazard.

Erika Dunlap, Miss Florida, Crowned New Miss America By: Kam Williams Tennessee Tribune Originally posted 9/25/2003
You've come a long way, baby. When I was a kid in the Fifties, it was such a rare thing to see a colored person on TV, even in a commercial, that you instinctively yelled for everybody in the house to come quickly whenever a black face popped-up on the screen. The virtual reality of what many now refer to as the Golden Age of black and white television was a vast white wasteland which banished any humans with melanin to the electronic Siberia of the electronically excluded.
So, it goes without saying, though I'll say it anyway, that the idea of a black, brown, red or yellow-skinned contestant in the Miss America Beauty Pageant was totally out of the question. Then came the Sixties and the Civil Rights Movement and, like lunch counters and swimming pools, the lily white contest grudgingly lowered the Jim Crow color bar.
Integration eventually led to Vanessa Williams' historic win in the Eighties, though it's still hard to cover the event without referring to its racist past. Now, a more enlightened America has capitulated to the point where females of darker shades not only enter, but actually tend to dominate the annual Atlantic City affair.
Last year, Erika Harold, a sister from Illinois, was awarded the coveted crown. Now, she just passed the title on to another Erika, Erika Dunlap, an African-American undergraduate student representing the Sunshine State. Three of the five finalists, in fact, were non-white, a not so subtle statement about the evolution of our standards of beauty.
The apoplectic Dunlap, who went into convulsions when her name was announced, took home a $50,000 scholarship in addition to that rhinestone tiara. She'll take a leave from the University of Central Florida, putting her law school aspirations on hold while promoting cultural diversity during her reign.
Erika won both the evening gown and talent portions of the competition, delivering a show-stopping rendition of ''If I Could.'' |

I'm in Phoenix with family. Put on 5 pounds, and I have a cold so I can't run it off.
To: Travis McGee
Check the local hashers ! Internal application of alcohol and lots of sweat, fresh air, bouncin harriettes etc etc.. should make ya feel better.
I too had my first application of carbs yesterday since September. Got dizzy on the mashed potatos and a slice of pie ....and as you gained 5 pounds no doubt !
Go get ya some stuff called "airborne" at the local pharmacy. Kinda like an alka seltzer on steriods. It'll kick that cold ASAP !!
Stay Safe Bro....Hope your visit goes well.....!
