Too bad, really, that Hillary is up there. People from Congress ought to look in on the troops every now and then, but when she does it, well, as someone pointed out upthread, it just makes it all political

No, it is a very smart move on her part...you see, she is planning to run in 2008 and will probably win (no I don't like that idea, but I suspect she will win)..

She knows by 2008, that the war will be recognized as just and necessary by the majority of the american people, and she will be able to point out that she supported our troops and even supported the war, although she opposed some of Bush's policies like "not going to the UN" (as if he didn't, but that will be her line)

Watch how she distances herself from the Deans and other lefties in 2004. Indeed, Wesley Clark is running because the Clintons recognize that a McGovern losing by a landslide is NOT the best way for a Democrat to win in 2008, and that if Dean turns off many mainstream Democrats, they may end up voting for Condi Rice instead of Hillary in 2008...

Well, yes, I'm sorely familiar with Slick and Beastie's plans for 2008. Bill Safire has discussed them in print and I've discussed them in here with other FReepers for the last year or so. I'm familiar with Slick's calculation that America will be sick of Wall Street Pubbie-ism after eight years and that the country will turn grateful, goo-goo eyes toward Beast Woman ..........especially since she and Slick will still be in solid, Peronista-style control of the Democratic Party and will give the Dems no alternative to anointing Hillary ("oh, gee, oh gosh, oh how unexpected......you want little old me to run?!!" <hurling noises in background, lentulusgracchus stumbles away doubled over, toward nearest fire escape/men's room/open elevator shaft>

I haven't doped out all the nuances of why the Felon Family are dangling Gen. Clark in the race. Either he is a stalking horse -- if he wins, does Hillary step forward to eat him up in the convention? -- or a sacrificial lamb. I haven't figured out the intramural, hermaphroditic aspects of the Dems' can-of-worms. Failing sudden illumination, I guess I like your theory as well as any.

Interesting, though, that you think Condi will be the nominee on the Pubbie side.......I think 2008 will be too early for her yet, no cabinet officer has ever done squat in nomination politics (Rummy is one who tried). She'll need to get her butt out to California to succeed the Governator first (can you say Aaahnuld!!), then she'll be ready. Or failing that, New York, when Pataki steps down. Still, I'd like to see Beast Woman's face if Condi threw her hat in the ring as the candidate of Castle Arbusto. It'd be more fun than turning a fire hose on the Wicked Witch of the West. Shrub sure thinks a hell of a lot of Condi, but I don't know whether, even if the Bushes could secure the nomination for Condi "just like that" (which would begin to raise some serious questions in my mind about the direction of American politics), she could get over Beast and Incubus; she'd be too green still.
