GIVE US ALL A BREAK. It was the CRA and McClintock that pushed this referendum. It was the referendum that stopped SB 60. It was the referendum that put fear in the leftist politicians.

As a McClintock supporter, I'll give Arnold credit on what's he done -- repealing the vehicle license fee hike, proposing some cuts. But you totally out of the California political scene if you think Arnold OR ANY REPUBLICAN would have gotten a repeal without a stick in the face of the Democrats. You really don't understand evil...and you don't understand what's happened.

With security checks in place and non negotiable, a lot of illegals would be turned away or they would not even ask for a license.

It is amazing how many Californians across all races and ages are against illegal aliens getting Driver's licenses.

I expect see the rabid supporters try to bring it up, and it will die or get voted down inspite of a huge media outcry supporting it. That will be the payback by certain senators and legislators. They will say, "We tried, and the racists defeated us!"

Here's the game. Cedillo and Schwarzenegger both have committed to driver's liscenses for illegal aliens. Cedillo's version is security blind and Schwarzenegger wants to keep the liscenses away from terrorists and criminals.

If Cedillo and Schwarzenegger did not kill the referendum before Dec 4 through the reported compromise then they would both face the embarrassement of a landslide vote against liscenses to ANY illegal alien on the March 2004 ballot soon after they had reached their compromise. Politics as usual.

Right now Schwarzenegger is standing tall but we'll check the public temperature if he signs a bill that issues California drivers liscenses to illegal aliens (with or without a criminal record). Were I the Republican loyalist in the crowd I take a moment of quiet satisfaction of a promise kept but I wouldn't identify myself to loudly for fear I would be remembered when the shit hits the fan this spring.

John and Ken of KFI640 say that Cedillo has been in meetings with Arnold this past week. They say the deal is if he votes to repeal SB60 he can come back with a "better" bill next year.

And .. I heard that the dems found out that LEGAL Hispanics were not happy with SB60.

So .. even if the dems did it to try to keep the Hispanic vote .. at least it was for the right reason.

Yep, this is the type of illegal alien who must never have a Californian Driver's license. Of course no illegal alien should have one to begin with.

This is not what it seems, especially if Cedillo is in on it.

Schwarzenegger still favors CDLs for Illegals; he always has; he campaigned on the issue; it was on his website. The length and breadth of his objection to Driver's Licences for Illegal Aliens revolves around "background checks," nothing more.

Schwarzenegger criticized Davis for signing a bill granting driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, saying, "We're leaving ourselves wide open to terrorism." And he repeated his support for a guest-worker visa program -- "then they can (get) driver's licenses hooked together with insurance."
Sacramento Bee - September 9th, 2003

Anyone who thinks Schwarzenegger has rethought his desire to give California Driver's Licenses to Illegals better think again...

Rescue California, the group which spearheaded the recall drive, is working with a conservative Republican group to collect signatures to put a repeal measure on the March ballot.

They have to collect 373,000 valid signatures by Dec. 5 and had collected 400,000 by Friday, according to Dave Gilliard, chief strategist of Rescue California. They want to collect at least 100,000 more to ensure enough valid signatures.

``It's just wrong on a very basic level,'' Gilliard said. ``It's wrong to give people official sanction, official privileges when they have broken the law and entered the country.''

By law, once the measure qualifies for the ballot, implementation of SB60 is put on hold until the March vote. If however, it is repealed by the Legislature instead of going to the ballot, the repeal might not go into effect until several weeks after SB60 becomes law. In that case, [Schwarzenegger's communications director, Rob] Stutzman said, the governor would likely put a halt to implementing the law after Jan. 1.

However, if the law is not repealed and not on the ballot, Schwarzenegger would follow the legal requirements to implement it, and if he didn't would likely face lawsuits, Stutzman noted.

If it is repealed now during the Legislature's special session, Schwarzenegger would be open to discussing the issue again in January once legislators reconvene for the start of their regular session, Stutzman said. He might be open to a compromise that tightens security procedures around obtaining a license, but still allows illegal immigrants to drive.

This is absolutely hilarious! So much for the Senate standing firm!

They were pandering no nothings, and still are. Arnolds election showed them they were nothing short of a recall at the ballot box themselves. The purge goes on, as well it should. They have had their way with this State, and it's financial condition is proof in the pudding, why they should go.!!

...Actually the Republican Party's MIKE SPENCE just stated on KFI's 'John & Ken' Talk Radio Show that...

...a deal was not struck on SB-60. That the State Senate finally "Got" the Message of the Recall Election. SPENCE testified at today's SB-60 Committee Hearing.

...SPENCE thinks that ARNOLD said something more like "Let's Talk about it next year" and then things really got rolling on SB-60.

When would the referendum take place? November 2004? That might affect who goes to the polls that day.

In the March Primary.

SB60 would be overturned no matter when it went to the polls, but it will be most sweet to compel President Bush and the Democrats to speak plainly about giving valid CDLs to Illegal Aliens.

We can force them to address the Mexican matricula consular money laundering cards, while we're at it.

The bipartisan appeasement to Illegals needs to end.

Interesting, but if Arnold signs a new "Improved" Driver's license bill for Illegals, won't he risk provoking another Referendum to overturn the law?

I don't believe Arnold would risk being embarrased by a new CDL Referendum - but I wouldn't bet my house on that theory either; Arnold is a very "Compassionate" Conservative if you know what I mean...

I'll be keeping my eye on both Cedillo and Arnold when it comes to this subject. There's no way I'm in favor of illegals getting anything (other than a deportation hearing).

I don't think the RATs in the Senate ever figured that Arnold would win by that much and the Recall would actually happen. Now that it has, the RATs are in a panic! Gotta love it!

This is not what it seems

This is exactly what is seems Saber and you know it.

This was a compromise to kill the referndum and enhance the chances for a compromised bill to be passed without a mortal backlash against both Cedillo (Democrats) and Schwarzenegger (moderate Republicans).

I appreciate your diplomatic approach but think that a clear warning is more suitable to this forum.
