I doubt that the case will ever be closed. To prove there was no conspiracy to murder JFK is to prove a negative, and that is not a practical undertaking for even the most competent investigators. A deathbed confession by a conspirator, corroborated with hard evidence could prove that there was a conspiracy but there can be no such certainty in proving the opposite.
Absent a proof, the case will remain open in the minds of most people because this killing has entered the realm of mythology. The myth that I find most compelling is that the Kennedys did business with Sam Giancana, double-crossed him, and then got whacked as a result. Even if it wasn't a mob excution, the Kennedys' involvement with Giancana is widely believed and is considered to be a morally reprehensible thing. That JKF may have paid for his and his father's sins with his life is a powerful myth of moral comeuppance, even if it isn't true.
The only way to close this case for all time is to replace the prevailing myths with something that people find more compelling and believable.

Thanks for your comments. I also thought at one time there was mob involvement. "Case Closed" goes in the entire mafia connection quite thoroughly. Mr. Posner convinced me that this was definitely not a mob hit.
If you haven't already done so, I suggest you read this section of the book. It's very compelling.
