So, What Sort of Free Republic Should This Be?

Most important sentence in the whole post. (and something that should be one of the requirements for being a conservative.

We would prefer people to do the right thing on their own.

The secret to keeping an open forum and keeping 'rules' to a minimum.

My sabbath was fine... it looks like the bosses of FR have improved the situation already.

>> Besides NOT posting this kind of stuff you've linked, those of us who can, ought to post more of the pertinent, worthwhile items.

I've noticed over the years that I'm finding articles by surfing the web rather than going right to it on the FR like I used to do. Then when I find something juicy - I come back to the FR and search for it.

The reason - we all know - is that small what-ja-ma-call-it of humman nature - everyone wants to find something and post it first in FR right there in breaking news - getting a moment of fame and get a gazillion hits.

I share Lead Mod, and MP concerns and have a suggestion....can we rig a system where the posts can be one-click rated by the readers (MSNBC does this on their web site)- and thereby obtain a different position in the "top ten" lists on the right? Or maybe a new category -- a recommended reading list of the day - consistent with FR's goals & missions. Molly Pitcher puts her own list up in ATRW every day and that's what I use !!

The one click rating could be something like "If you could pick a small handful of threads to recommend to other freepers today...would this be one of them?" (scale of 1 to 5)

The problem - I find - is the good articles are buried in noise....it's tough to find them.

Well, I am certainly guilty of this (as your list shows). My main problem has been thinking about things in a conservative mindset too often. Example with the tv thing - US, Manufacturing, leading the world in innovation. I don't see it as a weird story, I see it as business news.

The car seat bologna thing also touches on border security (we can find bologna but not terrorists, we can stop that but not illegal immigration, etc).

I posted one today about a dying kid whose toys were stolen, the cab driver had a previous record - this touches on our justice system, etc and so on.

I see your point and respect it, no problem here. But I agree with others I have seen that perhaps 'chat' is a poor name for it, most the stories going there are news related - and yet I don't think there is a topic list under chat for selecting which state it relates to. Many of the stories I post relate to crime, as I see that as an indicator of soceity in general. There is no crime topic to index there, but there is in news (and crime has historically been news).

If more people would simply post the non-news/non-political threads into the proper forum and topic to begin with, we wouldn't need to move as many threads and we'd all be much happier forum users

I can understand the non-news things, but then what do we consider news? I think that is the crux of the problem. I search through hundreds of news sources (almost daily) and what might be a top story in news in one place is chat here. Maybe a 'Political News' and 'General News' section would help define it better.

As I mentioned in another post here a few minutes ago, I post a lot of crime news as to me crime says a lot about the society you are in - from wod to child abuse. Some people choose more about new legislation (which I also try to drop in from thomas.loc and govexec).

I will try and do a better job of clarifying why I am posting things in my posts, I am just usually busy finding more things to post :)

We would rather have the local crime stories, along with the human interest, news of the weird, sports, entertainment, etc, posted to the general interest section.

The news section should be devoted mostly to news items pertaining our main concerns. Namely, politics, elections, government, conservative causes, activism, major current events, etc.

Is Lead Moderator your boss...who is he/she?

All of the Moderators (Lead, Admin's, Sidebar) actually report to each other - instead of a hierarchy, it's more like a circle. Everyone's in charge, but no one's responsible. It could be the world's smallest bureaucracy.

Yes, they all wear suits and ties at work. There is no "casual friday". Each has their own office. There are no cubicles. Meetings are held daily at 9am, 1pm, and 4pm, reviewing the status of the site. Reports are generated. The only known video of the office site is at the very end (after the main program, then after some black screen) of the tape "Alien Autopsy".

*There are occasions when, looking at the latest posts in forum, some chat thread regular is trying to push their thread past 50, past 100, past 150, etc. Usually it's a sextuple post, though I've counted a 14. Once the thread is pushed past a threshhold multiple of 50, the poster will give him or herself a big "Woo Hoo." Then another half a dozen regulars post their "woo hoos." Some time later, the process repeats.

**This is spam, and I hate it, too, even in Chat..... God love them.

*then certainly the daily chat threads belong in Chat.

**Aren't all the daily threads already in Chat?

Case in point.

Looks like chat to me Saber!

And I think there is no shame in being chat!

That thread is definately worse than the Hobbit Hole if they are spamming for 50. Barely any room left for actual ~content~.
