We can put up with Americans who seem ashamed to be American. Woe betide them, however, if they are proud of it. EXACTLY. This is the philosophy not only of Euros but of American liberals, in a nutshell.

Ann, what does your FIL think of someone like Ted Kennedy?

That's the elitists for ya. They're so used to being phony that when they meet the genuine article, they assume they're being snowed somehow.
Like the old saying goes, the surefire way to confound a Leftist is to tell them the truth...because they'll never believe it.

Obviously Bush's visit to England was a good move. I have seen several articles expressing surprise at the real Bush instead of the one the media has been portraying these last few years.

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd go back to Yahoo and find the picture of GW, Laura and the Queen.
Then, I'd find (somewhere here on FR today) the pic of that other "family" and the Queen when they were living in the White House.
WHAT a comparison. Well, actually, there IS no comparison.

Pollard's right on about his fellow Britts. But we need to remember a lot of Americans went through the same change of mind about Mr. Bush.

Singer who I guess is or was popular in Britain. The song I know him most by is the theme song of the James Bond movie From Russia With Love. That movie came out in 1963 however.

However how Matt Monro somehow represents an iconic American to someone in England is beyond my comprehension. I mean at best he was a middle tier singer. It's not like Sinatra or Elvis are unknown over there.

You could also tell that after W graduated from Yale, he got his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard. He is the grandson of a Senator, and the eldest son of a man who was a World War II hero, a Congressman, head of the CIA, and President of the United States. And the son of one of the most beloved women in American history.
He's a graduate of both Yale and Harvard. He flew fighter jets in the National Guard. He was an oilman in Texas. He turned around a major league baseball franchise. He married a kind and beautiful woman, and has two lovely daughters.
He was governor of the great state of Texas for eight years. His brother Jeb is serving his second term as governor of the state of Florida.
He defeated Al Gore not once, not twice, but three times in debate. He was elected President of the United States. He has been an honest, steadfast, confident and patriotic leader in a time of national crisis. He is beloved by millions of American citizens.
Yet the world thinks he is a stupid man. Such is the power of the worldwide left-wing propaganda machine.
We've seen this all before. Republicans are either senile-stupid (Reagan, Dole), psychotic-stupid (Nixon, Goldwater, Gingrich) out-of-touch-stupid (Bush I), or just, uh, stupid-stupid (Dubya, Quayle, Ford). It's the same old garbage from the same old commies.

This is the problem with Europe, they are so far behind us on the uptake that it's like they are living in the 50's when we use to belive everything we read.
The entire world is backward in comparison to the comprehension of most ordinary Americans, yet, funny as it is, they consider themselves the "enlightened ones". I suppose because of some conceit over the age of their nations in comparison to ours.
