around 30 were shot out from under him. ....I'd guess that is more than one per engagemnt. He is said to have observed that he had 29 horses shot out from under him, and killed 30 Yankees by his own hand, probably a record for General officers in that conflict, very possibly one for all time.
His words on the matter were that I have concluded the war a Yankee ahead....
Those of us who visit his resting place and statue here in Memphis sometimes refer to the bronze mount his sculpture is astride as *Number Thirty*. Curiously, if an apple is left in the vicinity of that steed, it's invariably nibbled upon, often to a fare-thee-well. Cynics try to place the blame on the local squirrels...but just maybe....

My father's grand-father rode with Forrest. He was forever mad-enraged by his mistreatment in Union prison camps. He never again ate his lunch-it was pure whisky & he lived into the 1920's.
