So the public discussions about the incredible lengths of the prime number keywords (or some such--well into my level of ignorance here) to insure astronomical levels of encryption. . . must be roughly true to protect our communications in this era of massses of super computers.

Yup. And the traffic's getting encrypted at just about every step of the way, so you're talking about cracking 5 or 6 different systems to figure out what the message is.
