And I would submit that any increase in consumer prices are only temporary and will drop again when American manufacturers catch up to demand. On the other hand if "free" trade transfer of American industry continues and dollar value collapses, Americans will not be able to afford foreign goods anyway. The difference will be that productive capacity will be gone.

Of course, a trade war will drive the dollar into the ground. So if a protectionist policy adversely affects the dollar, what are you worried about?
