We were home when our house caught on fire. Fire Marshall said if we had been asleep we probably would have died of the smoke and fumes before we ever knew there was a fire. Our smoke alarm didn't go off until after the firemen had been here about an hour. Fire was in attic. Smoke alarm is in house. ( We now have smoke alarm in Attic, too! ) but you are not safe staying at home, either. So I just go on out and have a wild time. LOL (We are almost finished with the fire damage/repair, it was kept to one closet, and the firemen saved ALL of the clothes in that closet). Next door neighbor saw the smoke coming out of the roof and came over with the water hose and he and my son kept water pouring on the fire until firemen got here.

On a brighter note, we now know how to do sheetrock, insulation, etc. It is a big smelly mess to work with, expecially the texture.

But staying home isn't always so safe......

I have to relate a story from the community I serve on the Fire department. Last summer we had a lightning storm in the area . One home owner had his chimney hit around 8:30 in the evening. The owner is a MD. He went outside and noticed a lot of bricks had been knocked off and were laying in the yard. It did not occur to him to have the fire dept check out his home.

Any way the next morning around 5:30 am the smoke alarm goes off. He pulled the battery out not seeing any problem. Walking back to his bedroom he looks up into a skylight and sees nothing but orange. The genius then comes to the conclusion that there is a fire in his attic.

Fire was in attic.

What caused it?

Wow. Glad you're OK. Was the fire electrical or furnace-related?

Just remember, sheetrock builds character.
