I am no fighter jockey but I understand they can lock on target a hundred miles out or so and missles do fly prety fast but still ,3-5 minutes isn't much time.

The fighters pulling patrol over our cities can lock onto multiple targets at one time...I would suspect they are constantly "seeing" all of the aircraft in the range of their radar.....
