President Fox defended his decision to replace Ambassador to the UN Adolfo Aguilar Zinser, saying it was Mexicans he offended when he made ugly comments about US policies that treat Mexico as if it were the 'backyard?' and that the relationship between the two countries is one of convenience and subordination.

I have to hand it to Vicente, he stood tall on this one, and didn't allow 'his' ambassador to get away with bad mouthing the USA, so he brought him home!!

Your PRI is most likely pissed. They will re-install him after the elections.

I have to hand it to VicenteI don't.
Fox would be boardering on the insane if he continued to allow his extranational cadre to ruin the perfect relationship.
Fox uses the southwestern US as a dumping ground for his poor and illiterate and in return he receives billions of US dollars for his efforts.
Fox has the perfect con going. He would simply be a fool to let a middle mangement type ruin the scheme.

Just as good a thread as any to post this joke:
Mexican Earthquake
A big earthquake with the strength of 8.1 on the Richter scale has hit Mexico. Two million Mexicans have died and over a million are injured.
The country is totally ruined and the government doesn't know where to start with providing help to rebuild. The rest of the world is in shock.
Canada is sending troopers to help the Mexican army control the riots.
The European community (except France) is sending food and money.
The United States, not to be outdone, is sending two million replacement Mexicans.
God Bless America!

The far left in Mexico controls politics, and the legislature is no exception. Fox may be President, but he hasn't been able to get any part of his agenda through the Mexican congress.
While I was greatly heartened by his election, it hasn't meant squat because the legislature and the governorships are still controlled by the PRI. I thought his election might start a new trend, but subsequent elections haven't shown that.
I'm beginning to think Fox was a fluke, and it'll be back to business as usual in Mexico before long.

The button on the CNN Spanish article asks: "Did you think the Ambassador was right, and it was good he said what he did?, and then another button, "this is non appropiate for a diplomat". Etc....of the readers of CNN Spanish, 65% of those who read the article thought the Ambassador was a hero for sticking the middle finger up at the US when he served at the post of the UN. 32% who read the article said he shouldn't have said it, because he was a diplomat.

I live in South Texas. I love to go to Mexico. I can tell when I cross the border because there are more Canadians and fewer Mexicans.

Fox uses the southwestern US as a dumping ground for his poor and illiterate and in return he receives billions of US dollars for his efforts I agree with the 2nd part but am puzzled by the 1st part. Mexico is full of the poor and illiterate. The ones that come to America are comparatively smarter and more savvy than the ones that stay in the slums.

I think Fox started out great --- but he kind of blew it with toalla-gate and the scandal around his marriage to Marta --- her kids using the presidential plane and all. I think he then lost a lot of credibility.

Anyhow --- I don't think the PRI candidate for the next elections is doing as well as Lopez Obrador. And PAN doesn't seem to have much of a candidate if they want to stay in Los Pinos.

You could be talking about California, with just a few substitutions: Mexico = California, Fox = Schwartzenneger, PRI = Democrats.

The ones that come to America are comparatively smarter and more savvy than the ones that stay in the slums. That's because they're filtered through Arizona and California before they get smart enough to move to Alabama.
The cream always rises to the top (gets out of California)

A Mexican diplomat bad-mouthing gringos is a positive treasure, praised by DF media and relished by the Mexican upper class. My bet is that Presidente Fox got rid of the UN Ambassador because Fox's cut of the Mexican drug trade in NYC has dropped off and Fox blames him. It has NOTHING to do with what was said!

Honestly, been there, and done that (live in Mexico and have 5 neighbors within a 3 mile radius who have left wives, and criminal records now living in the USA!), the riff raff seems to be the ones who fled bond posting at criminal hearings, and leaving wives...I don't think the savvy people went North. They generally are law abiding, and if denied a visa, stayed in Mexico. IMHO
To: Oatka
That's sadly a pretty darn good analogy.

the riff raff seems to be the ones who fled bond posting at criminal hearings, and leaving wives...I don't think the savvy people went North.I think it's both --- we're getting a mixture of good with the bad. There are illegals here who would rather be back home with their families but don't have a way to make a living there --- you see them working hard and sending money back so their kids will have a life --- but you see many just living it up getting drunk in the bars, finding new women and completely forgetting about any kids they left behind. Plus some of the riff raff come here, commit crimes, and flee bond posting to head back to Mexico.
Illegals include drug smugglers and dealers, those committing felony document fraud, hard working field hands and nannies, and others ---- some are the worst violent criminals and some are nonviolent benign types of people you could trust with every key you owned.
When you look at places like Ciudad Juarez though it seems that Mexican society is coming unglued.
