I wonder when it was that marriage licenses first became required. I'll bet none of our founding fathers had to get a "marriage license" from the state. ;-)

I'll bet none of our founding fathers had to get a "marriage license" from the state. ;-) Yes, but at that time, marriages were an undoubtedly more sacred institution, acknowledged with the blessing of a religious authority. Whether or not the government should authorize marriage is not the point, but it's in their best interest to support traditional marriage.
