Arsonist reduces CANDLES Holocaust Museum to ashes

Eva Kor says she'll rebuild

By Peter Ciancone/Tribune-Star

November 19, 2003

A museum devoted to spreading the message of love and forgiveness has been reduced to rubble in a crime apparently motivated by hatred.

Vigo County Prosecutor Bob Wright said they would treat the fire that destroyed the CANDLES Holocaust Museum about midnight Monday as a crime.

"There was an accelerant," he said. "We have every reason to believe there was an arson."

In addition, somebody -- possibly the arsonists -- spray-painted in black, "Remember Timmy McVeigh," on the brick wall of the museum building next to the door.Holocaust survivor Eva Kor opened the museum in 1995 at 1532 S. Third St. and served as its director.

"You can teach hatred, and you can teach love," Kor said as she stood in the rain looking at the charred remains, clutching a wrapped flower sent to her by a well-wisher. "I'm teaching that we can make a difference, and we do make a difference."

Stating the purpose of the museum, she added, "Let us remove all hatred from the world. Let it begin with me."

Wright said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has been called in to assist with the investigation.

Capt. Rick Erney of the Terre Haute Police Department said nobody had claimed responsibility for the fire.

"I wish they would," he said. "It would make our job easier."

Erney said the investigation was still in its early stages, but apparently someone threw some kind of accelerant through a window about 12:12 a.m. after a brick had been thrown through it.

Doug Garrison, spokesman for the FBI in Indianapolis, said some neo-Nazi groups did exist in Indiana, but their presence was neither active nor widespread.

The Southern Poverty Law Center Web site reports three National Socialist Movement cells in Indiana. There is no apparent connection between them and the crime, Wright said.

By the time Terre Haute Fire Department units responded to the scene, said Battalion Chief Jeff Stevens, the fire was already through the roof. The fire was quickly brought under control, but not before much of the museum's contents were destroyed.

Kor called the fire the product of, "twisted minds, twisted hearts." She promised to rebuild the museum to continue to spread its message.

"I feel that the difference that we made in the lives of young people -- for the best -- it's definitely important to continue that," she said.

In the rain, with the ruins of her museum in front of her, she added, "I'm sad, but I'm not giving up."

Kor survived medical experiments while she and her twin sister Miriam were inmates at the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz.

"I made the resolve then that I was not going to give up," Kor said.

She received the News Woman of the Year award from the Israeli Press in 1985, and won an Emmy as co-producer of a video devoted to the Holocaust, during which millions of Jews, Communists and people that the Nazi regime considered undesirable were murdered in camps throughout Germany and eastern Europe.

Kor was a signer of a Declaration of Amnesty forgiving the Nazis in 1995.

CANDLES stands for Children of Auschwitz Nazis' Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors.

Wright said he could not speculate on the meaning of the message painted on the wall.

The same message appears to have been started on the other side of the door, but the graffiti artist apparently planned poorly and had to restart on the other side. The first few letters of "remember" ran into the door frame.

McVeigh was convicted of the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168. He was executed at the U.S. Penitentiary, Terre Haute in June 2001.

The community already has rallied to support Kor. Advocates of Hate Free Zone in Terre Haute are planning a rally next to the museum at 4 p.m. today, and two rewards have been offered.

The International Association of Arson Investigators has offered $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the arsonists. The Anti-Defamation League has offered $2,500.

Erney asked anyone with information about the incident to call either the police at (812) 244-2264, or the IAAI at 1-800-382-4628.

Eva, it's OK to hate people who want to kill you and yours.

This persistent drive to wipe the memories of Nazi atrocities from historical records simply does the reverse - it magnifies them.

This is being treated as a HATE CRIME.

In Europe, it may well have not even been reported.

Museum Fire

A little piece of history is lost. Fire ripped through the CANDLES Holocaust Museum in Terre Haute, just after midnight on Tuesday.

I
nvestigators call the fire suspicious saying there is evidence of arson.

Police are treating the case as a hate crime after finding "Remember Timmy McVeigh" written on the wall. Investigators told Action 10 News that the building is nearly a total loss.

R
ight now, they're looking at samples to determine the nature of the accelerant that started the fire. They are also working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms because of the circumstances and the fact that this is possibly a hate crime.

Eva Kor founded the museum over eight years ago. She's saddened by the fire and wonders why someone set this place ablaze. "It couldn't be as bad and it's not as bad as being and living dead on the floor for two weeks while I fought for my life in Auschwitz." Auschwitz is just one of the memories spread throughout the museum now destroyed by fire.

Eva has a message for whoever did this. "They are cowards, they're absolute cowards." While police continue looking for those suspects, Eva plans to keep sharing her memories. "There are two choices in life when we face tragedy. Give in to despair or triumph over it." Triumphing over despair is just what the museum is doing by looking to the future of moving on and starting over. A process that may take some time.

In the meantime, Eva Kor and Mary Wright will continue to spread the message of how hatred only leads to disaster and as Eva said, "Hatred is ultimately self destructive."

The International Association of Arson Investigations is posting a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.

Y
ou can call toll free at 1-800-382-4628. You can also call the Terre Haute Police Department.

If you would like to make a donation to the museum, you can call Mary Wright at 234-7881.

Apparently her personal gesture on a visit to Auschwitz. I won't be signing. As a message of peace and hope, NO MORE BOMBS, NO MORE HATRED, NO MORE KILLING, it appears not to have worked. I understand her concern about access to records, but amnesty doesn't solve that problem.

Declaration of Amnesty Auschwitz 50 Years Later

I, Eva Mozes Kor, a twin who as a child survived Josef Mengele's experiments at Auschwitz fifty years ago, hereby give amnesty to all Nazis who participated directly or 'indirectly in the murder of my family and millions of others.

I extend this amnesty to all governments who protected Nazi criminals for fifty years, then covered up their acts, and covered up their cover up. Fifty years after liberation from Auschwitz, I Eva Mozes Kor, in my name only, give this amnesty because it is time to go on; it is time to heal our souls; it is time to forgive; but never forget; It is time to open up all the classified and personal files not only for the sake of history, but to alleviate human suffering. I, as a citizen of the Free World, declare here in-Auschwitz, that I have the human right to locate my Auschwitz files so I know what. germs and chemicals were injected into my body fifty years ago. I expect the leaders of the world to put politics aside and, for the sake of all humanity, assist us in getting our files. Help us make it possible for every Mengele Guinea Pig, for every survivor to find their files, their stories, their past.

I, the only living member of a very large family, in their name and mine appeal to the U.S. Congress, to the Israeli Knesset, the German legislators, and others who have the power, to pass laws dismantling all Nazi-related investigative units, such as the U.S. Justice Department Office of Special Investigations, and open up all Nazi files to survivors and the public.

Look up to the skies, here in Auschwitz. The souls of millions of victims are with us- and I am saying, with them as witnesses: "Enough Is Enough. Fifty Years Is More than enough." I am healed inside, therefore it gives me no Joy to see any Nazi Criminal In Jail, nor do I want to see any harm come to Josef Mengele, the Mengele Family, or their business Corporations. I urge all Former Nazis to come forward and testify to their crimes they have committed without any fear of further persecution. Here in Auschwitz, I hope in some small way to send the world, a message of forgiveness, a message of peace, a message of hope, a message of healing.

NO MORE WARS, NO MORE EXPERIMENTS WITHOUT INFORMED CONSENT,

NO MORE GAS CHAMBERS, NO MORE BOMBS, NO MORE HATRED,

NO MORE KILLING, NO MORE AUSCHWITZES.

Hey, that's not fair! There are TWO factions of the Democratic party, and it's not fair to lump the Useful Idiots faction in with the National Socialist faction.

(Besides maybe it's not the best location to bash domestic political rivals... even if you have a good point...)

Absolutely horrible situation - I sit here with tears in my eyes as I read this.

You know it occurs to me as I read this lady's amnesty declaration, that it was probably what she had to do to come to terms with the overwheming evil that was done to her and her family. Much like the people who forgive a person who has murdered one of their loved ones. While this helps the victim to heal, it does not release (and should not release) the perpetrator from facing justice. So let it be in this case.
