Scrollbar click drops two screens instead of one.

Vanity alert...
I use Windows XP Home. This annoyance began last week: When I click on the scrollbar with the mouse, the display drops down two screens instead of one. If I hit the "page down" key instead, it behaves normally, dropping down one screen. My wife, at her workplace, uses Windows XP Professional and has the same problem.
I read on a tech thread that perhaps a Windows Critical Update that was uploaded last week might be the cause of this?
Wonder if anyone else noticed a problem or has a cure?

I've got the same problem

Thanks for the idea, but I did try the Mouse settings in the Control Panel and was unable to adjust how many pages are moved down when clicking on the scrollbar.

It isn't the mouse wheel I'm having the problem with, it is the actual clicking within the scrollbar to move the screen down. It jumps down two pages instead of one.

If you downloaded the latest IE 6 security patch, that may be the problem. I was having similiar problems after downloading the patch and my Norton Anti-virus program caught a trojan program and isolated it. I checked it out and it was a trojan from Microsoft so I deleted it. I then ran Ad-Aware and it found 18 new "bugs" on my system...all from Microsoft. I deleted those as well and now everything works just fine. You can download Ad-Aware for free at

What was the name of the Trojan? And let me guess, you got an email from Microsoft that told you to install the latest security patch that was attached to the email?

I have exactly the same problem and it's driving me nuts! (And yes, I've re-booted several times.) Thanks for your post to learn about possible fixes. Like you, I suspect the trouble stated with a patch to Windows or IE 6.0.

Hmmm -- I installed the latest MS patch (XP Home) and neither Ad Aware, Win Patrol, NAV or ZA Pro indicate any Trojans on the system. Perhaps your "MS trojans" are from a different source -- such as e-mail?

I read on a tech thread that perhaps a Windows Critical Update that was uploaded last week might be the cause of this?Ahh, the joys of blindly accepting what ever MSFT tosses your way. Very often, a patch for problem 1 in program A will cause a problem in program B, which had no problems.
This is why the guyz running large data centers are sometimes loath to install updates. Playing a little, "been there, done that," I can recall many times after installing an update saying, "Well I wonder what that broke?" Invariably, there'd be a problem somewhere.
My 30 years worth of experience advice? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm running 3 completely patched Windows XP systems w/ fully patched IE6 and none are having the problem. I guess I'm the luck one.

I had the same problem and found that I had set the doubleclick speed on my mouse too sensitive.

I rather doubt you got a trojan from microsoft. I'm betting you got it some other way than going to windows update. Perhaps you responded to an email?

This problem has happened to a lot of people, it seems. Wonder if you are running MS Office? Could it be only those people running Office have gotten this bug? There were Critical Update patches out for Office in the past week.

You should have a restore point that immediately precedes any upgrade (you should excuse the term). Restore the computer to that point, and the problem should go away.
