Lt. Col. DeWayne Brewer, the 4th Inf. Div. Rear Detachment chaplain, heads Operation Peace and Joy, a program that gives the public an opportunity to show their kindness toward service members while still protecting the privacy of Soldiers. I kept getting inquiries from people in the community on how they could send items to Soldiers. So I e-mailed a two-page letter to a few people explaining that we are prohibited from giving out individual Soldier names and addresses due to privacy reasons, but they could send donations to my office said Brewer, a Kentucky native.
Now Im overwhelmed with the gifts that Ive received...

Thanks so much for putting up the article and the link.
This is very helpful for covering the "Timing Is Everything" angle of this
logistics project.

RightWingMama...thanks for bumping.
I'll also remind all lurkers/posters to check the thread linked in post #3.
And to remind folks who send packages to check that "redirect" box
and write in "Commander/Chaplain" on the Customs form.
That way, if your planned recipient is on leave or re-assigned out of Iraq/elsewhere
the package of goodies can be put to use by some other service-person who needs it
(at the discretion of the local Commander/Chaplain).
Of course, if the package is full of really personal items for the recipient,
you may want to mark the form to have the box returned if undeliverable.
Oh, and don't pack soap-type items with food (foodstuffs might end up tasting
like soap)!

An Army Reserve chaplain has mailed 300 donated packages to Iraq for Soldiers in the
4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, and plans to keep forwarding them as
long as donations come in.
A civilian salute to the military chaplains!
Most of my mailings have been going to a US Army chaplain in the Baghdad area.
I managed to track him down and get an military address after reading a story about his service.

I ask every one to seriously consider sending a package or two to our troops serving overseas. Not only will they appreciate whatever goodies or comfort items you ship, but your support for their efforts will do wonders for morale! If you don't know anyone by name to send a package to, post a message on this thread and someone will be sure to hook you up with a servicemember and/or resource. Cheers!
Also, please keep this thread bumped.

If carepackages are a budget-buster, folks might want to send a holiday card and/or
reading material. They can stop by a list of military addresses for folks posted
by my old hometown newspapers.

If you do mail something to these folks, just tell them a "Po-Hi" grad sent you their way.

You probably want to freepmail "Coop" (post #11).
Additionally, there is a list of addresses of service-members that would like holiday
cards or reading material; see the URL in post #18.
(It's probably better to send actual care-packages to folks who have gotten
some previous communication; Coop sounds like a better resource in that regard.)
