[history]
I am still in a state of shock from reading that Arizona does not have a tax on real estate sales.
This means that the thousands and thousands of transactions in one of the fastest-growing housing markets in the nation bring no revenue into state coffers.

"The Rats leaving the sinking ship California....do you suppose?" Partially. The other fraction is the "chillblains crowd" who are retiring from the Snowbelt to the Sunbelt. They move South and West because the cost of living is low, and bring along their socialist notions, which then get implemented, driving the cost of living up.
Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!

I heard on Bruce Jacob's show Wednesday morning that the Republicans wanted a complete review of the agency before they would appropriate any more money; but Butch wouldn't go for it, and the AZ Republic carries Butch's water.

I wouldn't say the whole state is turning leftist per se. Its definitely a toss up state as opposed to a conservative stronghold it has been in previous years.
Don't forget, when it comes to the Republic, there is an editorial staffer sitting there choosing who and what gets published. With hundreds and hundreds of emails and letters a day, you get the pick of the letter for which moonbat epiphanies get printed.

Hi
I am moving to AZ soon, and thanks to all of your postings, feel I know alot already. One thing, I doubt we'll subscribe to the Republic!!
To those who want to tax everything that moves, and then again when it quits breathing, no tax is a bad tax. But if sales taxes were added to home sales we would see the end of the housing market boom. When oh when will they understand that higher tax rates do not equal higher tax revenues!
To: Bekki4Bush
where are you moving too? I bought a house in what was a county island, a nice, low tax alternative to suburban living, until the City of Chandler was nice enough to annex the subdivision to add to my taxes. Watch where you decide to go.

Gotta stop making it so accomodating to all the snow bird transplants (particularly the ones from the EST zone) and, I hate to write it, my fellow Californians. There you have it.

Show me a state with real estste transaction tax that doesn't also struggle with educational funding.
The nature of bureaucracy is such that it will absorb available funding, then get hungry for more as it grows...like a teenager.
And the quality of education, as illustrated by subjective analysis, is generally inversly proportional to its cost. Go figure!
Sorry, Ma,am [tips Stetson]

If I may suggest, you should take a look at
Sierra Vista, Arizona located in the southeast corner of the state. We are about 70 miles southeast of Tucson.
We are a good community very conservative (Fort Huachuca the home of the Military Intelligence School) and a number of FreeRepublic types.
Weather is nice with lots of open space and places to explore.
Come give us a look.

I'm going hunting in AZ for property too, I've heard that Sierra Vista had a bit of an illegal problem....trampling through yards etc...is that true?
Not wanting to start a flame war, just curious as to what the situation is down there.

Well since you're conservative, I figure you can make your own way anywhere, without much of a welcome matt! ;)

We will be in Surprise. Not worried too much about taxes, as we are coming from Ohio where we pay 7 1/2 % income tax and sales taxes just raised on everything including haircuts, dry cleaning, and many other formerly untaxes services. (and car sales plumetted as soon as the sales tax 1% increase went into effect.)
We have a RINO governor, and illegal school funding structure (as declared by the Supreme Ct) that relies mostly on homeowners property taxes. We will save lots by leaving here before we begin to liquidate retirement funds.
To: belmont_mark
Don't be so down on the EST folks...that's us. Midwest values are much more conservative than you may think... you need us to keep the California, Seattle, and Portland liberal transplants at bay!!
To: Bekki4Bush
Sales taxes in AZ, at least in the Phx area is 8.1%. Food is not taxed in Phx but is in Glendale. Not sure about the other suburbs. Property taxes--your car will be a big jolt. Annual registration for ours (1994) was $100. Emissions was an additional $27. Property taxes for a 1,000 sf home (mine) was approx. $1,100.

I forgot about the elec. bills--in the summer it can be expensive. Water, at least according to my mother-in-law, our bills are high. Ours runs between $48-52/month when we are not watering our lawn.

Yes we do have a problem all along the AZ - Mexico border. The biggest part of it is their trashing the wildlands preserve areas. They just want to pass through here as fast as they can as there are not the kinds of "jobs" that they get in this area.
There has not been a problem of increased crime as a result though.
Hijinx you want to chime in on this?

Well, I'm one of those who want to leave the sinking ship and I really want to go to Arizona (already put money down on some property) so this is VERY disturbing.
