8000 according to the Tibet Times. 10K according to some reports in the Indian press. Since the early 90's.

Sounds about right, I figured between 5K-10K to date.

Can you think of any early action or incident that might be considered *the first shot fired* that marked the incidents as a full-blown insurgency rather than isolated incidents? Or an approximate start date?

It's sad to think that as we were celebrating the disestablishment of the Soviet Union and the downing of the Berlin Wall, we overlooked the rats in the Nepali chickenhouse.

The crackdown on the democracy demonstrations in the early 90's. The Monarchy's refusal to devolve power and the crackdown could be considered the start. 91/92?

Hey, we went to sleep on Pakistan/Afghanistan too. The EndofHistory and the pending triumph of liberal constitutional democracy.

We slept, history didn't.
