"The Delgado family of El Paso, Texas, wants to send a message to the family of brain-damaged Terri Schiavo in Clearwater: Don't give up hope.
"In March 1995, Velma Delgado got up one morning feeling dizzy and sick. The 24-year-old's parents got her to the nearest hospital, where doctors told them fluid had accumulated on her brain and caused it to collapse onto the brain stem.
"The damage was irreversible, doctors said, and she probably would die or, at the least, she would never recover. A priest came; last rites were given.
"In April 1998, after being kept alive by a feeding tube and turned in her bed every two hours, day and night, for three years, Velma Delgado woke up. She moved, she began to make sounds, she even walked with help."
