Who are those guys in the picture?

10th Mountain, I believe, on Mt. Rainier. I've got some good pics of WWII Finnish ski troops, but their german-style helmets weren't quite what was wanted for the pic. Here's another for you.

FYI, in summer, the Swiss and Finn ski troops become bicycle troopers, still a valid means of transportation and a silent one, in their plans on how to fight wars in their neck of the woods.

The Narvik paper put a picture of Marines with snow shoes on the front page. They thought it was hysterical that winter warfare troops couldn't ski. Sort of like motorcycle soldiers with training wheels.

When I was stationed in Bavaria, I noticed a flyer asking for volunteers for the Garmisch ski patrol at one of the service clubs, and as our battalion's Übersetzer und doltmescher- battalion interpreter. I figured in was a few weeks TDY away from the routine at the S2 shop, and the chance to learn to ski and meet cute Swiss and Italian snow bunnies was an okay benefit too.

First surprise: we were snowshoe mounted, though I picked up x-country skiing on my own, and was pretty good at it until 1978.

Second: we mostly went out at night, after the ski bunnies had already retired for the evening's festivities. Deals like that are never as good as they sound.
